Osum Canyon

Osum Canyon

Osum Canyon (Kanioni i Osumit) is one of the most spectacular natural sights in southern Albania. It stretches for about 26 kilometers near the small town of Çorovodë. The Osum River carved the canyon over millions of years, leaving vertical cliffs that rise up to 80 meters.

In spring, melting mountain snow swells the river and creates dozens of temporary waterfalls that pour down the canyon walls. In summer, the water becomes calmer and reveals small beaches and hidden caves. This is the best time for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing beside the river.

Rafting and Hiking in Osum Canyon

The most exciting way to explore Osum Canyon is by rafting. From March to June, high water levels make the river fast and full of energy. Rafting trips take you deep inside the gorge, under rock arches and through narrow corridors where sunlight barely reaches the water.

If you prefer to stay on land, you can:

  • Walk along scenic trails above the canyon
  • Stop at viewpoints with sweeping panoramas
  • Join local guides for short walking tours to learn about the geology and legends of the area

In summer, when the river is calm, the same trails are perfect for hiking and photography.

The Charm of Çorovodë and Surroundings

Çorovodë is the nearest town to Osum Canyon. It has small guesthouses and traditional Albanian eateries. On warm summer evenings, locals gather at riverside cafes and bars, creating a laid-back atmosphere.

If you want more adventure, the nearby Tomorr Mountain National Park offers wild peaks, alpine meadows, and quiet hiking trails. Combining both places gives you a perfect mix of culture, nature, and adventure.
